In Nome del Popolo Italiano (doc, 7', Italia, 2012)

Padri di famiglia, lavoratrici, ragazzi e ragazze nati in Italia. Al centro di identificazione e espulsione (CIE) di Roma ne arrivano ogni giorno. Non hanno commesso alcun reato, eppure rischiano di passare 18 mesi dietro le sbarre in attesa di essere espulsi. La loro detenzione è convalidata da un giudice di pace. In nome del popolo italiano. Basta un permesso di soggiorno scaduto. Lo dice la legge e questo basta a tranquillizzare l'opinione pubblica e a rimuovere il problema. Noi però abbiamo deciso di andare a vedere. Ne è nato un documentario breve, un viaggio per immagini e storie nel CIE di Roma. Perché siamo convinti che mostrare quei luoghi e ascoltare quelle voci significa rompere una definizione. E ribadire che nessun essere umano è illegale. Nemmeno quando lo dice una legge.
In nome del popolo Italiano è il primo di una serie di documentari brevi prodotti da ZaLab con il sostegno di Open Society Foundations sulle più gravi emergenze democratiche dell'Italia di oggi. Lo scopo dei mini-doc è raccontare le molte violazioni di diritti fondamentali che attravesano il paese e raccogliere la voce di chi le vive sulla propria pelle, fuori dagli schemi e dalle semplificazioni giornalistiche. I documentari brevi di ZaLab nascono per la diffusione sul web e nell'ambito di campagne di sensibilizzazione e advocacy.

CAMPAGNE
S.O.S. Europe - A quale costo umano difendiamo le nostre frontiere.
18 Ottobre ore 12.00, Parlamento Europeo, Bruxelles. Proiezione di Mare Chiuso e dibattito. Partecipano: Claude Moraes, hosting MEP, S&D, Stefano Liberti, co-autore, Diana Eltahawy, ricercatrice per Amnesty International in Libia, Abu Kurke, rifugiato Etiope fra i pochissimi sopravvissuti alla traversata che nell'aprile 2011 costò la vita a 63 persone in fuga dal conflitto libico,
Amnesty International organizza la proiezione nell'ambito della campagna "When you don't exist", con l'obiettivo di accrescere la protezione dei diritti umani di migranti, rifugiati e richiedenti asilo in Europa e ai suoi confini. Con lo slogan "S.O.S. Europe", la campagna tenta di far luce sulle violazioni dei diritti umani alle frontiere d'Europa, con l'obiettivo di identificarne i responsabili. LABORATORI
ZaLab è da oggi partner Regards2Banlieue.tv, progetto biennale di scambio e azione comune fra laboratori video attivi in Europa. Nel corso dei due anni, il progetto permetterà la circolazione di partecipanti e lo scambio di metodi e contenuti fra laboratori video in 5 paesi europei. Partecipano al progetto: Escola Popular de Cinema con INCA - Catalunya (Spagna), Centre Video Bruxelles (Belgio), COMBEAT (Olanda). Regards2Banlieue.tv è un'iniziativa dell'associazione La Cathode (Francia) con il sostegno della Commissione Europea - Programma Grundtvig.

In the name of the Italian people (doc, 7', Italy, 2012)

Family fathers, female workers, young boys and girls born in Italy. Many of them arrive every day in the Identification and Expulsion centres (CIE) of Rome. They did not commit any crime, nevertheless they risk to spend 18 months behind bars waiting to be expelled. They detention is validated by a Justice of the Peace. In the name of the Italian People. An expired visa is enough. According to the law. And this is also enough to reassure public opinion and delete the problem. However we decided to go and take a look. A short doc came out of it, a journey made of images and stories from the CIE of Roma. Since we believe that showing those places and listen to those voices means breaking a definition. As well as confirming that no human being is illegal. Not even when the law say so.
In the name of the Italian People is the first of a series of short documentaries produced by ZaLab with the support of Open Society Foundations on the serious democratic emergency in today Italy. The main aim of the mini-docs is to narrate the several violations of fundamental rights across the country and to collect live testimonies from those who personally suffer from the situation, out of preconceptions and journalistic simplifications. ZaLab short docs are conceived for web distribution within the context of public awareness and advocacy campaigns.

S.O.S. Europe - The Human Cost of Defending Our Borders
18 October 2012, 12.00 - 14.00, Bruxelles, European Parliament, Screening of Closed Sea and panel discussion.
Panelists: Claude Moraes, hosting MEP, S&D, Stefano Liberti, one of the directors of "Closed Sea", Abu Kurke, a 25 years old Ethiopian refugee, one of the 9 survivors of the fateful boat crossing in which 63 people died attempting to flee the conflict in Libya, Diana Eltahawy, Amnesty International's researcher on Libya.
Amnesty International organises this screening of the award-winning documentary "Closed Sea" as part of its campaign "When you don't exist", which aims to improve the protection of human rights for migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers in Europe and its borders. Under the slogan "S.O.S. Europe", Amnesty's campaign seeks to shine a light on human rights violations at the borders of Europe and aims to hold those who are responsible to account. VIDEO WORKSHOPS
ZaLab is now partner of Regards2Banlieue.tv, biennial project of exchange and common action among video laboratories active on an European level. In two years, the project will allow the common sharing of participants, methods, and contents among video laboratories in 5 European countries. Escola Popular de Cinema with INCA - Catalunya (Spain), Centre Video Bruxelles (Belgium), COMBEAT (Holland) joined the project. Regards2Banlieue.tv is an initiative of the association La Cathode (France) with the support of the European Commission - Grundtvig Program.
